Spring time dilemmas

Spring is in the air, the weather is getting warm, the grass is getting green and we are seeing new life everywhere. The sows are farrowing, the heifer had her calf, we have new ewes and lambs on the property. With all the excitement of new life we also face the harshness of nature and the inevitable loss of stock as well. We celebrate the births and know we can’t save them all but we fight like hell and do everything within our control and ability to make sure all our animals are cared for and get the best care possible. Sometimes that means we spend a Sunday nursing a sick lamb back to health or making the call to cull them to save them from suffering. These are the decisions all producers make. No one makes them lightly and a lot of phone calls and text messages are exchanged before that decision is reached. There may even be a visit to the vets office after hours just to make sure we are making the right decision. This is springtime on the farm!
