Why do we make our own dog food?

I would love to be able to say that it was strictly to ensure that our dogs were eating quality whole foods without any added junk, but that wouldn't be the entire truth! Although that is an added benefit, we started this journey because of our CEO of Quality Control.... Sam is the king of the castle, and our entire world revolves around him and his high maintenance requirements. Sam is allergic to everything under the sun including all native grasses and trees, almost every protein source that is found in commercial dog food, gluten, and last but not least even human skin 😒 We have been able to source commercial dog food that is limited ingredient and had success with those options. But due to inflation and supply chain issues it was not always a viable option both economically and availability. Since we raise our own livestock and have feed barley for our livestock, we decided to try our hand at making our own! We strive to use every piece of each animal that we harvest from our farm, this includes all the organs and bones. We make bone broth for the dog food and add the organs to the dog food as well. There have definitely been many health benefits for everyone in the pack and there has been a drastic reduction in Sam's allergy symptoms! Although we do still mix commercial feed into the wet food the dogs are getting approximately 75% of their food intake from animals that we have raised on the homestead.
